Risk Score Nomograms are based onOHS Risk Assessment AS/NZS 4804:2001 and contained in HB205-2004 OHS Risk Management Handbook. The Ratings used for the Risk Calculation have been adapted from Fine, Journal of Safety Research 1971 page-159. The risk assessment calculator is intended as a guide to identify level of risk. The risk score so calculated should be interpreted with caution.  It should only be used as a basis for consistency of reasoned judgment.

  • Consequences are defined as the most probable result of the potential incident.
  • Exposure is defined as the frequency of exposure to the hazard.
  • Likelihood is that the complete sequence of events leading up to consequences will occur upon exposure to the hazard

The aim of the Risk Rating or Scoring System is to have a consistent standard across an organisation for rating risks. This is a legislative requirement in most jurisdictions and a criteria for self insurers to be met as part of an organisations self insurer licence. The outcome of applying a consistent risk rating system across the organisation will be improved decision making in choosing appropriate, adequate risk control measures leading to more effective management of risks and prevention of injury and property and environmental damage

Hi Paul,

Your own organisation should determine your own parameters/definitions then apply the tool accordingly. There is no and there should be no scientific formula for calculating risk to 3 decimal places :-) there are too many perceptions involved.

Sorry, no plans for a Mac version but I believe there is an app you can buy to allow you to run .exe files on a Mac??????

L.S.!
Great tool – 2 questions:
1. Will it be available for Apple computers too?
2 Would it be possible to get a list of definitions of the probalilty, exposure &nd consequences parameters?
(It seems impossible to trace the Journal Of Safety 1971 issue…)

Thanks in advance & best regards, Paul.

Just to thanks for some great software and for making it available. Like many of the guys who have left comments the calculator will me save a lot of time and will prove to be a useful tool when used with the cost justification calculator, especially when it comes down to persuading / influencing senior management. Thanks again

We agree support, travel risk management is a process like any other business process system. Unfortunately, few limited organizations or business travellers fully appreciate either the benefits rewards of effective travel risk management planning nor the pitfalls failures and hazards of bad travel risk management planning.

Hi Carl – I really appreciate your feedback – thanks heaps fro that!
It is a very useful little tool, I like how you can instantly see the affect of changing the variables

Hi,
I’ve been a professional security consultant for awhile and I’ve been using a similar interactive tool since about 2005. When I returned to Australia my computer was wiped and I lost my tool. Thanks for making this available. It is a great asset for getting Senior Managers to recognise appropriate levels of risk. A picture says 1000 words and this tool quickly paints a picture that is very difficult to argue with.

Thanks again.

This is great! I’ve distributed it to all my security officers – this will help them think a little differently about incidents and issues – looking at the bigger picture. Thank you

The calculator is a great piece of software. I’ve seen the manual versions before and even used them for bit but they were just to difficult to use quickly and if you made a mistake drawing the lines – well you just had to start again. Your application overcomes all of those problems. Thanks for making it freely available.
