Apartment Fire Safety
Apartment Fire Safety

Living in an apartment can be one of the greatest joys in the world, but it only takes one unfortunate accident to forever alter your lifestyle. While many of these happenstances are unavoidable, some, particularly fires, can be minimized through basic safety practices.
Smoke detectors should be item number one on your fire prevention list. If your apartment comes equipped with some (and it should), be sure to replace the batteries upon move in (vacuuming them for spiderwebs and other interference is also a good idea). Make sure your hallway is free of paper and other easily-ignitable trash, and the apartment community exit lights should be highlighted and easily visible. Contact your apartment community manager if you feel something needs addressing that is of a safety concern.
Make sure everyone in your apartment has a fire escape plan in place. Designate a safe place to meet should you get separated, and be aware of all exit points in your apartment. If you are on a second floor or higher, consider purchasing a rope ladder or other safety escape devices in case the hallways are inaccessible. If you find your exit is blocked, put wet towels under your door to help keep the smoke at bay, and placing a damp washcloth to your nose may help with your air intake.
Keep a list of emergency numbers on hand near the phone, and have a small bag filled with a change of clothes, important papers and a flashlight set to go just in case. Purchasing several fire extinguishers to store around your apartment might be another good idea. Remember, the odds of your apartment being involved in a fire may be slim, but sometime being prepared makes all the difference in the world.

Really good advice, apartments can be more dangerous than a house as they tend to be a lot bigger. Apartment people should have more fire safety plans in place!
