Motorbike and Scooter Safety Campaigns and Links

The QLD Department of Transport and Main Roads’ motorcycle safety campaign, ‘Be aware. Take care. Survive’, was launched in May 2008. The campaign alerts riders to the facts about the risks they face on the road and encourages them to take responsibility for their own safety by undertaking specific protective behaviors.

The campaign also urges motorists to watch out for riders and reminds drivers and riders about simple road rules that will help keep riders alive. All communication was developed in collaboration with the Motorbike Safety Working Group.

The Queensland Government motorcycle safety website contains further information for motorcyclists, including advice for new and experienced riders on choosing the right motorcycle, appropriate safety gear, conducting pre-ride checks and safe actions in emergency situations.

Currently motorcycles and scooters account for 3% of the Victorian motor-vehicle fleet and for 0.6% of the vehicle kilometres travelled. Unfortunately, riders are over-represented in road trauma. In 2008, they accounted for 14% of all road deaths on Victoria’s roads.

Motorcyclists have a high vulnerability to sustaining injuries on the road given their limited protection in the event of a crash.

TAC’s latest motorcycle safety campaign urges riders to reduce their personal risk by slowing down and wearing full protective clothing every time they ride. The public education campaign highlights to riders the level of risk they are exposed to on the roads and emphasises that regardless of who is at fault in a road crash, it will be they who will come off second best.

The Motorcycle Council’s Road Safety Website

Motorcycle Council of NSW (MCC) road safety web site. This site is for riders and others with an interest in improving motorcycling safety.

The site is part of the MCC’s strategic plan, Positioned for Safety, for a systematic approach to motorcycle safety based on evidence. Positioned for Safety is the result of consultation with riders, the motorcycle industry, road safety researchers, local government and state government agencies. It provides a framework and direction for the MCC and other stakeholders to improve road safety for motorcyclists.

The aim is to enable riders:
1. To become informed participants in the motorcycle safety debate.
2. To take part in setting the agenda and driving issues pro-actively on behalf of motorcyclists rather than simply reacting to government policy decisions.

The strategic planning process:
• Identified the key safety issues for motorcyclists in NSW
• Determined priorities and established objectives for the MCC and other stakeholders
• Identified strategies for addressing those issues
• Developed stakeholder support and participation in improving motorcycle safety
• Established a base for coordinated, long term planning for motorcycle safety.

Positioned for Safety set out a program of actions to address motorcycle safety from four perspectives. This website uses that format to provide information to riders and to others who are interested in motorcycle safety.

Safer RoadsWHO deals with poor road design or condition
Safer PeopleWHAT we know about motorcycle road safety
Safer EquipmentWHICH clothing and equipment will help to keep you safe
Safety Co-ordinationWHEN we work with other road users and government agencies.

The site also includes links and references to research about motorcycle safety issues.

Very interesting – thanks. Can you send me a few short, original articles about your products and I’ll gladly publish them for you.

What have you done so far in regards to lobbying these with the authorities?

I saw too many morons out in the heat today riding in thongs, tshirt and shorts.

Dear Riskex,

Thank you for your interest and comment.
I can provide some information of what we’ve done – much of it is available for quoting on our sites, but there is of course lots more – we’ve been distributing for 8 years!

I will forward some info in the next few days, but feel free to contact me direct.

Most other jackets are copies of the Hit-Air (it’s the original, since about 1995 – see http://www.hit-air.com ).

Of course, any comments made would be seen by others as commercial/promotional, however we have great pride in the gear and its value in prevention/reduction of injuries from both personal and clients. See some of the comments we have received (attached).

We haven’t done much lobbying as we haven’t the time, are seen as biased commercially, and found bureaucratic encumbrances too much hassle and time consuming. Authorities have generally been unable to assist (“no facilities, etc” or focus on issues similar to the hurdles faced in the introduction of vehicle airbags). I must however note that as some awareness grows – and a few more brands or airbag jackets appear – there is a little more interest. Hit-Air was perhaps 10-15 years too far ahead!

I can comment on some of our approaches to TAC, MCC(NSW), RTA(NSW), Vic Coroners, Police(NSW, Qld, WA), NSW [Thoroughbred] Racing, ASTB, etc.

A final point – I rode in the heat on Saturday with a mesh airbag vest ( and even on the hotter New Year day some years ago when it was 42C+ in a mesh airbag jacket! – I still remember the looks I got for many other riders!).

Yours sincerely, Yvoir Hingee. HIT AIR Australia.

There are several airbag jackets – easy to Google and YouTube search.

Good point – do you have a link where I can find more info about these airbag jackets??????

Yvoir Hingee February 7, 2011 at 11:42 AM

STILL the Authorities fail to meal with one of the best safety items available to motorcyclists – the airbag jacket.

Commercial issues aside, even if a percentage of injuries/fatalities are prevented/reduced using this gear – then the effects on the rider/pillion/recovery services and other issues are very significant!
